At just 15 years old, Carien Engelbrecht is charting a remarkable course in the high-octane world of Inflatable Power Boat Racing. Hailing from the small West Coast town of Vredendal, her journey is one of courage, discipline and determination, showing young women everywhere that there are no limits to what they can achieve.ย
Carien grew up surrounded by boats thanks to her fatherโs passion for the water. โMy father had a boat for as long as I can remember, and I would often join him on boat rides,โ she reflects. But her true introduction to the sport came in 2023, when mentor, Marc Gleed gave her the opportunity to work with his team during the legendary Trans Agulhas race. โThatโs what really opened my eyes to the sport,โ Carien recalls. The experience ignited a fire that would see her transition from ground crew to competitor within months.ย

In early 2024, at just 14 years old, Carien entered her first competitive race at Theewaterskloof Dam with special permission from organisers. She immediately impressed, showing grit and natural ability far beyond her years. Strong performances followed at national events in Gariep Dam and Mossel Bay, where she held her own against much older and more experienced copilots. Even the fierce surf at Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay, a challenge that rattles seasoned racers, could not deter her. โHer determination is phenomenal,โ says Gleed. โShe persevered, stayed focused and built her confidence race by race.โย
Carien admits that competing against older, more experienced copilots was initially intimidating. โIt was extremely challenging and sometimes stressful, but Uncle Marc really helped me overcome that fear,โ she says. Her mindset quickly evolved, allowing her to rise above the pressure and find her place in the sport. This growth led to her inclusion in Gleedโs team for the 2025 season, where she now copilots alongside Dylan Bamberger, the reigning Stock Class World Champion. Already this year, she has secured podium finishes at regional and national events.ย

Life as a young racer comes with sacrifices. Every weekend, Carien travels 350 kilometres, one way, from her hometown to Somerset West for training. During the week, she juggles schoolwork and fitness routines to stay race-ready. โWhen I have exams, I stay home and study, but otherwise my weekends are for training,โ she explains. The sport leaves little time for hobbies, but Carien is committed. โRight now, racing takes up most of my time, but I hope to explore more interests in the future.โย
Carienโs next big challenge comes in December, when she will compete in the 750-kilometre Trans Agulhas, known worldwide as the toughest inflatable boat race. Looking even further ahead, her seat has already been confirmed for the 2026 World Championships, where she will compete on the global stage.ย
As Womenโs Month ends, Carienโs message to other young women is simple yet powerful. โI want to encourage all women in motorsport to reach for their dreams. There is no limit to your success.โย
Her story is more than just a sporting journey. It is a reminder of what is possible when passion meets perseverance. With her eyes on the horizon, Carien Engelbrecht is not only breaking waves but also breaking barriers for women in motorsport.ย
